Located at the Bronx High School of Science, the lab is a unique university-level facility that allows public high school students across the Bronx to conduct sophisticated experiments and prepare them for science at the college and professional levels.
The building houses three flexible labs, which permits equipment and research practices to change over time. Each lab is supported by shared equipment spaces and collaboration rooms.
It occupies a prominent place on campus with the larger main building to complete an outdoor courtyard where students gather between classes. It is visible from all sides, and subtle offsets in the massing and rooftop screening give each façade a unique visual proportion and contextual relationship.
Its advanced scientific infrastructure is matched with high sustainable performance. Based on the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories benchmarking, this carbon-neutral-ready, all-electric building’s Energy Use Index is only 40% of peer buildings.
